Home to top global companies in the UK such as Rolls-RoyceBombardier and Toyota Motor Manufacturing UK – the city has developed a strong supply chain and cluster in advanced engineering and transport technologies/ICT. Businesses are operating in international markets, and the city is widely known for its innovation and R&D.

Notably, Derby has Europe’s largest cluster of rail engineering companies, containing 8.8 times the national concentration of rail firms, whilst the aerospace sector contributes £6.9 billion to the economy and supports 45,000 jobs regionally (ONS).

SMEs & Start-Up Companies

The city is also home to thriving SMEs and start-up companies. Derby is ranked 6th out of 64 UK cities for innovation based on patents awarded (Centre for Cities, 2013) and being named a top-10 city for entrepreneurs in 2012 (Choose Your Accountant).

Derby is continuing to support SMEs and start-up companies by investing in enterprise centres across the city. Already home to various business hubs, Derby City Council are creating another four projects to further support entrepreneurs. This includes new developments Sadler Bridge Studios, Kings’ Chambers, the Shot Tower and the Magistrates’ Court.

Derby's Economic Performance

Derby’s economic performance is amongst the strongest in the country outside the South-East – and in the top ten for workplace GVA per capita. Derby was also labelled the UK’s number 1 industrial investment location between 2013 and 2017 by Estates Gazette (2012).

The city is now embarking on new plans to enhance Derby as a business destination by investing in city centre office developments, enterprise centres and a new hi-tech business park to meet business demands.
